Serious competition ahead for Team Thompson Sailing

It’s a week of serious international competition ahead for the MPI-sponsored Team Thompson Sailing, with three of the four brothers taking to the water for events in Hungary and Spain.

Fresh from a relatively successful performance at the International 420 World Championships in San Remo, Italy, older brothers Ross and Johnny are touching down at Balatonfüred, Hungary, for the Junior European Championships, from 29 July to 5 August.

They are one of three British under-17 crews racing at Balatonfüredi Yacht Club. Watch for their sail number 54682 and see the MPI branding.

Meanwhile, their younger brother Jake – watched by the youngest Thompson, Toby – is in Santoña, Spain, for the RS Tera World Championships, from 30 July to 5 August.

Team Thompson’s recent successes include Ross and Johnny finishing 31st in the under-17 category in San Remo – but with the honour of being the leading British under-17 crew.

The Frensham Ponds Sailing Club duo narrowly beat Itchenor’s Eleanor Keers and Isobel Pugh, who took 32nd place. Itchenor’s Isabel Dawes and Gemma Keers took 9th place in the Ladies category.

Jake Thompson was one of seven Frensham sailors in the 42-strong Sport fleet (age 15 and under) at the RS Tera Inland National Championships at Grafham Water last month and one of three race winners. He finished in 5th place overall.

Watch for Jake’s sail number 2560 in the Sport fleet in Santoña. There are 54 boats in the fleet – 30 are UK entries. The Pro fleet (18 and under) has 29 boats, of which 19 are from the UK.

MPI Brokers’ sailing season also includes sponsorship of the annual Schools Week at Itchenor, featuring Fireflies and International 420 boats, in June, and an appearance as an exhibitor at the Southampton Boat Show in September.
