Ross and Johnny Thompson (separate teams in the 420 class) from MPI sponsored Team Thompson Sailing, showcased incredible skill at the 2017 RYA Youth National Championships at Hayling Island Sailing Club.

With the winners crowned across 12 classes on Good Friday. The 379 sailors were tested with varying conditions on the water. There were outstanding performances in all classes.

Alex Smallwood Helm (Datchet Water SC) and Ross Thompson Crew (Frensham Pond SC) dominated the lead from the outset securing first position by an amazing day 4 out of the 5 day event. Although it seems that they have had a seamless week both boys explained in interview that conditions were tough to deal with at times; even having to change the boat set up towards the end of some days. On day 5 the boys widened the gap between the successful duo Isabel Davies and Gemma Keers of Itchenor SC by 55 points.

We’re ecstatic with the boys result and our MD Michael Pettifer a keen sailor, says: “Judging from the success Ross and Alex have achieved so far this season and Ross’s good form last season, we are all looking forward to an extremely exciting summer of sailing. Congratulations to all!”

Speaking after the event, Ross said: “I really enjoyed the mix of conditions and the one really windy day, which was good fun. It made for really good competition.”

Ross is the eldest of the four MPI sponsored boys. Johnny (Helm) second eldest, also competed in the regatta with his crew Ollie Hawkins and came 20th out of 44 entries and 9th boys. A great comeback after Ollie suffered an injury at the Inland Championships at Rutland Water SC in March. All four of the Thompsons have demonstrated great sailing ability across their classes and are growing in experience in competing at national and International level.

MPI are proud sponsors of Team Thompson Sailing alongside other selected youth sailing and ski events. We really enjoy being involved in events that see the next generation develop their skills both up the mountain and on the water and through our presence, hope that they start to understand the relevance of a good travel insurance and how important it is. An important part of planning any trip, many forget – don’t be one of them. If you are interested in a quote please click here
