More than 380 sailors from 62 nations have travelled to Sanya Bay, and they are champing at the bit to take gold in their class.

The Youth Worlds kicks off tomorrow (Saturday) with registration and equipment allocation followed by the opening ceremony on Sunday. Racing is from Monday to Friday. This event is renowned for identifying Britain’s youth sailing talent and has defined the careers of many Olympic gold medallists.

Alex (Datchet Water SC) and Ross (Frensham Pond SC) are a powerful team and have had a particularly accomplished season, winning gold at the RYA Youth National championships at Hayling Island SC, along with many other favourable results this year.

Currently, it’s set to be great conditions for the Youth Worlds – lighter winds at the start of the event, steadily increasing for the remainder of the week. We know from past events that Ross and Alex sail particularly well in stronger winds, therefore they will be glad to see the back of the light shifty gusts that are forecast for Monday and Tuesday.

This is the highlight of the year for the athletes. Ross and Alex are really humbled by their achievement and are looking forward to meeting many other likeminded sailors from all over the world.
