Pistes excellent, off piste near perfect – our report on snow conditions

En route to the MPI sponsored Independent Schools Ski and Snowboard Championships at Les Deux Alpes, MPI MD Michael Pettifer tested conditions at Tignes and Val d'Isere.

He writes: "I have been skiing here for the past two days and the overriding theme of snow, weather and ski conditions in Tignes and Val d’Isere is very cold with a biting wind. It has been snowing almost continuously for a week with a foot of new snow every day, and as I write it is snowing heavily again.

"Piste conditions are excellent, although due to the time of year and the sheer volume of snow, not all pistes are pisted. Off piste is near perfect with knee high powder and surprising little wind crust.

"I skied yesterday with Henry's Avalanche Talk director Chris Radford who said the avalanche risk is 3, which is low considering the amount of snow,. However the snow appears to be relatively stable due to the intense cold. Watch the risk rise if we get a warm spell.

"In order to enjoy your skiing even more I suggest a rubbing of blue wax on your skis and buff up with a glove or cork. This allows the skis to glide more efficiently over the snow: it’s akin to having the correct tyre pressures on your car. The only shop I found which sells blue wax is Ski Set."
